Facilities

Basic science courses in physiology, pharmacology, chemistry and physics are provided by the University of New England (UNE). Courses in anesthesiology are given at both at UNE and at St. Joseph Hospital School of Anesthesia for Nurses.
St. Joseph Hospital is a merged two hospital complex with a total capacity of approximately 250 beds. In excess of 10,000 anesthetics are provided annually. Anesthesia is administered for all types of surgical procedures, excluding open heart surgery, organ transplantation and obstetrics.
In addition, St. Joseph Hospital School of Anesthesia for Nurses has a teaching arrangements with five affiliated sites:

  • Rhode Island Hospital (Providence, RI) for extended experiences in neurosurgical anesthesia and cardiovascular anesthesia.
  • Hasbro Children's Hospital (Providence, RI) for experience in pediatric anesthesia.
  • Veterans Administration Medical Center (Providence, RI) for experience in regional anesthetic techniques.
  • Worcester Medical Center (Worcester, MA) for experiences in obstetrical anesthesia, cardiac anesthesia and anesthesia for thoracic surgery.
  • Backus Hospital (Norwich, CT) as an enrichment site for extended experiences in regional anesthetic techniques, pediatric anesthesia and obstetrical anesthesia.
  • West Roxbury Veterans Administration Medical Center (West Roxbury, MA) for extended experience in cardiac anesthesia, neurosurgical anesthesia and regional anesthetic techniques.
